Left Column Title:
Applications and Value of the CMR dataset
Left Column Content:

Decision makers generally have limited basis for understanding the potential effects of the different choices they are faced with. The Cardio-Metabolic Risk (CMR) forecast dataset can be used to fill gaps in the existing evidence, providing insights and understanding that would otherwise be unavailable.

Example questions that can be answered

Problem: Where should you focus efforts to reduce heart attacks and strokes in a population?

  • What risk factor(s) should a new program address? Hypertension? Obesity? Smoking? Dyslipidemia? All of them?
  • Should you just give aspirin to high-risk patients and everyone over the age of 50?
  • What about not adding any new programs and just trying to improve performance on existing guidelines?
  • Which is better, a smoking cessation program that costs $500 and has a quit rate of 8%, or a $2000 program that has a quit rate of 13%? What will be the net of those two programs after five years? Ten years?
Right Column Content:
  • What about providing greater incentives for physicians and patients to adhere to existing guidelines?
  • Should you reward them for each intervention equally, or should different interventions be weighted in some way to reflect their clinical value and effect on costs?
  • How much can you afford to pay to improve performance, and still lower costs?
