Medical Director - Archimedes, Inc.
The Medical Director provides leadership, strategic insight, direction and implementation for Archimedes. Under the leadership of the Vice President of Medicine, will co-lead, direct, champion and guide Archimedes projects from conceptualization through completion acting as a clinical liaison between the client groups and the Archimedes Scientific staff, as well as the Archimedes executive team.

Archimedes is a growing for profit start-up company founded to answer complex questions and improve the quality and efficiency of health care by using advanced mathematics and computing methods to build realistic simulation models of physiology, diseases and health care systems. Archimedes is an innovation of and is funded by Kaiser Permanente and is intended to benefit healthcare worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Provide consultative services during the sales/business development process and client engagements from a clinical medicine perspective.
- Provide an initial assessment of the client's needs and determine if the questions of interest are suitable for simulation modeling.
- Answer complex questions about the validity and functionality of the Model.
- Facilitate large complex meetings in order to help customers formulate their clinical questions in the context of the Model's capabilities.
- Work with the team to ensure that clear and concise project proposals are written in order to capture the scope, methods, and timeline of projects.
- Coordinate with Science Team to confirm feasibility of the project based on the current state of the Model (e.g., determine necessary enhancements to the Model, scientist staffing requirements).
- Formulate and communicate the clinical questions of interest to the scientific staff and act as the liaison between the client and Archimedes staff.
- Analyze the Model's results and translate them into clear and concise written reports and presentations for the client.
- Present the results to the client, follow up with any revisions, and determine the potential necessity of new calculations.
- Create a project report based on the final results of the simulation.
- Help the client identify additional projects.
- Be an effective team player interfacing well with the Archimedes scientific, software, administrative and management staff.
- Develop and foster strong relationships with key opinion leaders in the medical field, through direct interactions with medical advisors and clinical leaders.
- Provide clinical leadership and direction to support the refinement and development of Archimedes Model and provide quality assurance oversight to Archimedes.
- Provide general medical support in partnership with the Vice President of Medicine to the scientific team.
- Write and publish papers.
- Deliver speeches to significant external audiences.
- Deliver speeches and presentations internally.
Requirements:
- Sufficient knowledge of both mathematics and medicine to bridge these two fields.
- Thorough knowledge of health care delivery, clinical outcomes, and research design.
- Ability to understand and explain the science that informs the Model.
- Consultative salesperson with the capability to envision the application of Archimedes in novel ways to solve complex needs.
- Excellent written, oral and presentation skills for both scientific and nonscientific groups, with the ability to discuss complex issues in a simple way.
- Evidence of leadership and a management style characterized by vision, teamwork, preparation, communication and negotiation. A history of successfully managing relationships and the ability to influence others at all levels of an organization.
- Broad contacts in health care, pharmaceutical, health care delivery, health service research and health policy arenas, including governmental agencies is a plus.
- Broad familiarity with diseases, medical practices, and clinical experiments.
- Ability to critically appraise journal articles.
- Ability to provide and implement creative solutions to difficult and unanticipated problems.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously.
- Experience with writing technical reports for customers.
- Consultative sales experience a plus.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A qualified M.D. degree is required.
- A Masters level education in a quantitative field such as mathematics or statistics is highly desirable.
