Archimedes Founder and Chief Medical Officer David Eddy honored by Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy

Receives Prestigious Steven G. Avey Award for Pioneering Efforts in Evidence-Based Medicine, Modeling and Performance Measurement

San Francisco, Calif., April 17, 2008 — Archimedes, Inc. today announced that Founder and Chief Medical Officer, David Eddy, MD, PhD, has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Steven G. Avey Award by the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy (FMCP), a non-profit charitable trust affiliated with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP). The Steven G. Avey Award is considered to be the most prestigious honor for an individual working within the field of managed care pharmacy, and is conferred upon someone who has made significant and sustained contributions to the advancement of the profession of managed care pharmacy in clinical and/or administrative practice. Dr. Eddy received the Award at the AMCP/FMCP Awards Dinner held in conjunction with the AMCP 20th Annual Meeting and Showcase.

"It is such an honor to receive this distinguished award from my esteemed colleagues in the managed care pharmacy field,” said David Eddy, MD, PhD, Founder and Chief Medical Officer, Archimedes, Inc. “I will continue to dedicate my future work to improving how healthcare organizations make critical administrative and healthcare decisions. My colleagues at Archimedes and I are continuing to further refine the Archimedes Model to extend its analytical power to as many people in the healthcare arena as possible."

In conferring the award, FMCP president Steve Gray recognized Dr. Eddy’s many contributions, including his work developing the original concepts and methods underlying evidence-based guidelines, coverage policies and performance measures. Dr. Gray also noted Dr. Eddy’s groundbreaking work in treatment guidelines and mathematical modeling, among other areas, that will influence future medical practice.

"Dr. Eddy’s work in evidence-based medicine has almost single handedly reshaped modern medical and pharmacy practice,” said Steve Gray, President of the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy. “His innovative work has advanced the development of multiple areas in the healthcare and pharmacy arena and will continue to influence future generations of practitioners across broad realms of medical practice. We are proud to confer this important award upon him for these reasons."

About David Eddy, MD, PhD

David Eddy, MD, PhD, is the Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Archimedes Inc. He started his career as a Professor of Engineering and Medicine at Stanford, and the J. Alexander McMahon Professor of Health Policy and Management at Duke University. David received his MD from the University of Virginia and his PhD in Engineering-Economic Systems (Applied Mathematics) from Stanford. More than 25 years ago, David wrote the seminal paper on the role of guidelines in medical decision making, the first model applied to clinical problems, the original criteria for coverage decisions, and was the first to use and publish the term evidence-based.

The Archimedes Model combines biological, medical, and economic data with advanced mathematics and computing methods to create a simulation model that can analyze healthcare questions with an unmatched degree of realism and accuracy. The core of the Model is hundreds of equations that represent human physiology and the effects of diseases. Attached to these are hundreds more equations and algorithms that realistically simulate the healthcare system including processes such as tests, treatments, admissions and physician behaviors. Together with population data, the equations are integrated into a single, large-scale simulation model that accurately represents what happens to real people in real healthcare systems. The Model’s accuracy has been validated by successfully simulating more than 50 separate clinical trials. It is the only full-scale simulation model of clinical medicine and the only healthcare model that has been validated so rigorously.

About Archimedes:

Archimedes helps healthcare organizations improve the quality and efficiency of their programs and services. Its proprietary software, the Archimedes Model, is designed to help people understand the implications of their decisions and can be applied to a range of real world scenarios, including physiological changes, physician behavior and cost and patient decision implications. The Model has been repeatedly tested and validated and can be relied upon to answer complex, real world questions. Archimedes, a Kaiser Permanente Innovation, is based in San Francisco, California.
